Reserve Bank of India (RBI) offers a structured internship programme designed for students and young researchers, usually under one of two main categories: research internships and summer internships.
What is the RBI Internship About?
Interns get exposure to central banking functions, economic research, policy work, data analysis and related areas. Research Internship scheme provides an opportunity to young individuals to expose themselves to cutting edge research in central banking. It best suits individuals who have been in college
relatively recently and wish to move on to pursue Ph. D. in Economics, Banking, Finance or
related fields, or to positions in government research institutions, or financial institutions that
require a quantitative and analytic orientation.
Role Description
The opportunity will be open to domestic as well as foreign students.
- Selected candidates will work closely with RBI research teams, contributing to projects that support policy formulation and are intended for publication in reputed economics and finance journals.
- They will be responsible for gathering reliable and up-to-date data, and applying appropriate analytical, statistical, and econometric techniques to effectively carry out research assignments.
- Over time, interns may also take on greater responsibility, including drafting high-quality research papers and policy articles.
Qualification & Experience
🔹 Eligibility Criteria
a) DSIM (Department of Statistics and Information Management)
Candidates should have a postgraduate degree in Statistics, Econometrics, or Economics. Applicants with a B.E./B.Tech (Computer Science), MBA (Finance), Degree in Data Science, B.Sc. (Computer Science), or M.Sc. in Applied Statistics, Data Science, or Data Analytics are also eligible.
b) DEPR (Department of Economic and Policy Research)
Applicants must hold a postgraduate degree in Economics, Banking, or Finance, MBA (Finance), B.E./B.Tech, or any quantitative-focused postgraduate qualification in Economics, Finance, or Statistical Sciences. Candidates with expertise in Computer Science or Data Analytics are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of programming or the ability to learn programming skills is essential.
c) FSD (Financial Stability Department)
Postgraduates in Statistics, Economics, Econometrics, or Finance are eligible. Candidates with an MBA specializing in Finance or Banking can also apply.
d) ID (International Department)
Candidates must possess a postgraduate degree in Economics, Statistics, Finance, International Finance, International Trade, or an MBA with specialization in Finance, Banking, or International Relations.
🔹 Preferred (Desirable) Qualifications
- Strong understanding of applied econometrics and quantitative research methods
- Familiarity with econometric and analytical software such as Stata, EViews, Matlab, R, Gauss, Python, Tableau, or Power BI
- Basic knowledge of Machine Learning techniques
- Prior research experience will be considered an added advantage
🔹 Work Experience
Previous work experience is not mandatory for applying.
Internship Duration & Terms
- The internship will initially be offered for six months. It may be extended for an additional six months depending on the department’s requirements and the intern’s performance. In exceptional cases, high-performing interns may receive further extensions. However, the total internship period cannot exceed two years, with renewals granted every six months.
- Selected candidates are required to complete the initial six-month term. If an intern chooses to leave before completion, a minimum notice period of one month must be provided. In case the notice period is not served, the intern will be required to pay an amount equal to one month’s stipend.
- The internship position is located in Mumbai, India.
